Who is the Hoosier Flag Lady? Mary Lou Kieswetter. This wonderful flag display in highland Indiana was erected in her honor in 1975 for her continued work and service in the previous decade. While she led a national movement, it is difficult to find her name on the internet.

This display is found in Highland, Indiana along US hwy 41 in, otherwise known as the Highway of Flags. This highway connects the upper peninsula of Michigan to Miami, Florida, via Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia. These State flags fly in order above the crests of the military.

Kieswetter noticed there was a lack of flag respect. by 1966, she created the Indiana Council for the Encouragement of Patriotism. By 1969 this committee was changed to the National Council for the Encouragement of Patriotism. Sadly, Mary Lou passed away this year at 87 years of age. Her presence will be greatly missed.

If you have any additional information on Mary Lou, we'd love to hear about it.
