A few years ago, we decided to ride our bicycles from Indianapolis to Chicago visiting all the flagpoles along the way. Most were not flying flags or rigged with make-shift parts. We wanted to do something about this and help flag flyers get the most out of their flags and flagpoles. That's when we became the FlagRunners!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17483647678131735261noreply@blogger.comBlogger286125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3288346161720486144.post-35808264988162460752016-01-19T10:59:00.001-06:002016-01-19T11:06:12.463-06:00WE'VE MOVED!

Today, protests are taking place at the capital building in South Carolina over whether South Carolina should continue to fly the Confederate Flag. This raises a lot of issues for our history and how we move forward through it. Racism is still a major topic in our country. We have seen debates of prejudice spark across the country. The issue of taking the Confederate flag down comes after the murder of nine black church members in Charleston, South Carolina.

This is an example of how a flag can unite and a flag can divide. The Confederate flag is stained on the wrong side of American History. In many ways, Slavery played an important role in the foundation and formation of our country; and we continue to pay the price for it. The Confederate flag is not only a symbol of slavery, the stars on the flag represent slavery states.

Should we change the Mississippi State Flag?

The symbols a flag portrays can change meaning over time. Flags evolve. South Carolina flew the flag over the capital to reflect a rebelliousness as well as an honor code unique to the South. But the Confederate flag can not be both a symbol of hate and bondage as well as a symbol of honor.

The swastika was originally a sign of peace in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. When Hitler adopted the symbol, he effectively changed it's meaning and relationship for the Western World. These symbols were removed out of respect for the victims of WWII. By this same token, we shoudl remove the flag over the capital.

If the South want to keep a healthy symbol of their heritage, they could take the elements of the Confederate flag, remove the references to slavery and construct a new design that moves the South forward onto the right side of History. There are many versions of the Confederate flag since its conception in 1861: The Stars and Bars, The Stainless Banner, The Blood Stained Banner, etc.

Racism is complex and national issue. History will pick sides. Flag flyers know the power the flag has over the community. Flying the flag comes with responsibility. A torn American flag can be as disrespectful as anything else. What we fly, how we fly it, is important to what we say as a country.

This comes from today's events and a previous post on the Confederate Flag...

This is in response to the article above–Virginia Flaggers are raising a Confederate Flag outside of Richmond Virgina with much criticism from the community.

A fellow flag flyer sent us this article this morning. While it doesn't go into much detail about the history of the confederate flag, it paints a good argument for both sides. The Virginia Flaggers are going to/have raised a 10x15 ft. confederate flag just off I-95, a prominent vantage point. The flag is not intended to be harmful in any way. However what the flag has come to represent is very emotional for many people. This article shows the intent of the Virginia Flaggers, but also the reaction of the NAACP.

This is not the first time the Confederate flag has thrown up controversy. WWII, after the battle of Okinawa, a Confederate flag was raised for 3 days before the general ordered the flag be taken down. This was not because of dark historical meaning, but because the confederate flag had grown in popularity to represent the soldiers of the south. General Buckner felt the flag neglected those soldiers from the north.

We say, See Your Community Through The Eyes Of The Flag. Flags are emotional and can inspire so many things both positive and negative. The reactions shown in the article above indicate just how prevalent those feelings are, even today after nearly 150 years. One thing is certain, flags make a statement. We should never forget who we are or our history. But we should not encourage the mistakes of our past.

I recently met a man who does Civil War reenactments. We spent hours talking about the authenticity of the events he was apart of. "People were much harder back then." He told me. "The uniforms are wool. They are heavy. I get rashes all over my body and I can not stop sweating." When I asked him why he did it, he said, "I'm a history nut. I don't know. It is crazy, but I get to relive some of the most critical moments in our history as a nation."

Do you think a Confederate Flag should be flown as a welcoming symbol to Richmond, VA? Chicago is a history of great symbols. The city flag is one of the best city flags designed in the country. In fact, we would say the city flag out ranks the Illinois State flag in design. The simple stripes and stars tell a story. As the hawks image, it is an mistakable marker for the city and Chicagoans display the city flag on most everything.
Today, the city of Chicago celebrates the next chapter in Stanley Cup history. On Friday there will be a parade. Flags will fly throughout to show support for the accomplishment of a dynasty. It is great to see a company like Ozinga take the opportunity to show their pride. What a great week to be a Chicagoan and what a great day to fly the flag. Congratulations Blackhawks!
Yesterday was Flag Day... probably one of the more forgotten holidays in the calendar year.
Typically we are not as enthusiastic about Flag Day as you might think. The American Flag for us, is a symbol for honoring, remembering, and celebrating something larger. We use the American Flag to represent our what we want to say.

We celebrate the flag every day it is flown out front. We celebrate the flag every Memorial Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway when veterans unfurl it over the race track. We celebrate the flag as it stands around the Washington Monument. For us, every day is Flag Day. It is a 365 day commitment and we are proud to do it.
One thing Flag Day does do, is tell us the 4th of July is on the horizon! It's time to get your grill, patio, pole, and flag in perfect condition to celebrate the independence of USA. So here are 5 ways to recover from Flag Day for a phenominal 4th of July.

1. Check your flag, check the closet.
Flags will show signs of wear before they fray badly. Same is true for parts. The rope on a flagpole tell its own story. The display can look amazing but the rope is on its last strand. This is why we like to remind flyers to check their parts when they replace flags. Having a few spare flags or parts in the closet can be handy when the flag holidays roll around. If you are like us, these things can sneak up on you pretty fast.

Washington Monument

2. Think outside the flag.
Stick flags, fans and banners are not just for political campaigns. Like your Christmas lights, you can reuse them every year, unlike your Christmas lights, they wont tangle up on you. This year, don't settle for red, white, and blue plastic cups. Historic American Flags are also a great idea for making a statement.

3. Find a friend who's been putting it off.
We get calls all the time that start off something like this. Hello, my name is ________ and I'd like to get a flagpole. I've been meaning to do this for ___ years. Chances are you know someone who's ready to join the flag flying community. A good way to get over Flag Day is encourage that friend to finally make the leap. Flying the flag is a big commitment. There are those who understand that commitment and accept the charge. Our job is to make flag flying a great experience. But first you have to want to fly a flag.

Rough Ryders

4. Share in the reminder.
Help your neighbor out, if the flags look
frayed, remind him (nicely!) the 4th is coming up. In our experience,
people don't mean to fly a warn flag, they just need to be reminded to
look up every once in a while. One of our fellow flag flyers likes to
pass out stick flags to his local community and says, "on the 4th, let's
all fly the flag."

5. Don't fear, think ahead for next year.
If you stick up a few spare parts, spread the true meaning of the American flag, and help others spread the word, you should recover from Flag Day quite nicely. However, Flag Day comes along every year. Stay prepared. Don't let Flag Day bring down your 4th of July.

This is all is good fun, but in all seriousness, we just like people who fly flags because flag flyers are the back bone of the community. We are lucky to have our place in this story. The flag unites us and is the most enduring fabric in the history of our nation.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17483647678131735261noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3288346161720486144.post-46923231946278561202015-04-30T09:35:00.002-05:002015-04-30T09:35:37.629-05:00Looking at Fiberglass Flagpoles: Installation, Butt Extension, Benefits

Fiberglass composite has found it's way into the flagpole fabrication line for its unique ability to be both rigid, flexible, and rust-free. But the benefits of fiberglass do not stop there. Due to its bonding nature, fiberglass can be cut into sections, scored and pressure fit together with nearly loss-less durability. In addition, fiberglass coatings have come a long way. Installing a fiberglass flagpole has a few extra steps, but it is very manageable. For these reasons, we thought it was time FlagRunners do an installation tutorial on Fiberglass.

Here is a break down of the fiberglass flagpole flagpole:

We are particularly impressed by the foam plug the rests just underneath the access door where the cam cleat sits. This plug prevents the rope from falling down the center of the flagpole where water tend to accumulate. Its aluminum colleague does not have this feature. If you let the rope fall to the bottom of the pole, often time freezing water in the bottom will prevent the flag from being able to raise or lower. With this fiberglass system, you don't have to worry about that as a potential concern.

Finally, in the spirit of the flag flyer, fiberglass is the ultimate Do-It-Yourself flagpole. The pole is so light-weight (compare to steel or aluminum), you can easily walk it up with one other person at the base. Just check this video out!
For a flag in high winds, flown 24 hours a day, 7 days a week the mission is not as much about the flag as it is about the flagpole parts. Better parts leads to longer flag life and TODAY WE PROVE IT. This flagpole was a standard one-piece commercial "entry series" flagpole. We swapped the truck on the top for a revolving truck. The job went well, we left feeling proud the flag was flying. Fast forward a year and nine months later...

The customer called and said the flag was starting to fray and she wanted to replace it. She had not touched the pole since we left it nearly two years ago. We wanted to see our work first hand and share it with you. Turns out the rope (1/8" PH8) was inadequate for the slightly over-sized flag. The halyard had warn in a few spots. While it could have lasted another 6 months to a year, we didn't want to take the chance. We replaced the halyard with 5/16" PH10. With a difference of less than 5 cents per foot, it only makes sense to upgrade.
We feel like knocking on the door and telling the homeowners to contact Flag Desk to get the right flagpole quality, size and put it in the right location. Every detail was considered when Flag Desk put our flag pole up, like how far the right size flag needs to be from the house and trees, what direction our eagle should face, longevity using rotating truck, snap covers and more - it was well worth it!! Our flag is flying high and is BEAUTIFUL!! Thank you, Flag Desk!!"

- Sam the flag flyer

This President's Day, we take a moment to recognize the leaders of our country. We thought it would be nice to look at one of Abraham Lincoln's early flag stories. During the year of his election, Abraham Lincoln was relatively unknown. This ad, which was published in 1860 shows his name was spelled incorrectly.

President's Day lies on the 3rd Monday in February and always reminds me winter is here! From Lincoln to Clinton, we've had to weather many storms. As a nation, we elect one person to lead us through these times. We put our faith and four years into these individuals who do their best to rise to the challenge.

President's day has become an opportunity for marketing companies to offer promotions. It seems like there is always a series of commercials. So that got us thinking, what is President's day all about? Do we have to go all the way back to 1860 to figure it out? Well in fact! President's Day began in 1800, 60 years prior.

Following the death of George Washington in 1799, George Washington's birthday, Feb 22nd, became an annual day of celebration. We know it is President's Day, but it is still officially called George Washington's Birthday to this day!
Update! What we THOUGHT was the Northside Hispanic Ministry was in fact the Barnes Hiscock Mansion (formerly the Syracuse Corinthian Club). In 2009 this mansion was acquired by the George and Rebecca Barnes Foundation. We did not see that the sign in front of the building was referring to the building on Green Street just down the lot (which has since been removed). Since we were out there last winter, it appears changes have been made to further restore this mansion and take care of its property. Thank you Karen for your information.

The flagpole, was a gift from Senator John A. DeFrancisco. The senator was first elected into office back in 1992. He focused on community awareness, commitment to fiscal responsibility, campaigns to reduce crime/welfare, as well as encourage government transparency. All of these issues are still the focal point today, over two decades later.

This is a testament, flagpoles don't have to be new, to be up-to-date. The building looks more like a plantation home on James street in Syracuse, New York. And while the years have been tough on this building, the upkeep and appreciation for the space is clear.

Steel flagpoles are very old. They date back many years. Rust and wear can be seen in many of the foundations. This has led to some problems in the past with flagpoles failing, falling over from neglect. In the heart of Syracuse, a building like this would typically be in transition for renovation or boarding up. We were glad to see this facility was in the process of being restored.

But the renovations don't stop at the archway and they started just in time for the winter season. So let's talk about this steel flagpole. The foundation was in remarkably good shape. The counter balance Counter Balance Foundation system (coder-pin system for tilting the flagpole down) was still in tact. Typical steel counter-balance poles are rusted closed. This is not to say the pole did not have wounds from wear and maintenance. But what was more surprising was the new halyard (rope) Polypropolene Cut to length, the new cleat 9" Cleat, the new truck and ball top.

It was as if this place had answered the FlagRunner's prayers and faced their flag flying with a pious swift hand of justice. What remains is an untapped beautiful mansion. FlagRunners owe a thank you to George and Rebecca Barnes Foundation as well as Senator John A. DeFrancisco for giving their people a flag to follow.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17483647678131735261noreply@blogger.com343 Green Street, Syracuse, NY 13203, USA43.0565769 -76.13537109999998643.056531400000004 -76.135450099999986 43.0566224 -76.135292099999987tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3288346161720486144.post-20214981205152240382015-01-19T08:00:00.000-06:002015-01-20T09:28:15.985-06:00A Flag for Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Call to ServiceToday is Martin Luther King Day and National Service Day. This day is about many things of course, lets take a look and consider the flag flying community idea. For some, it is a day of remembrance, for others, it is a day of giving. National occasions and traditions such as these provide the fabric for what might become a new powerful flag. But what would Martin Luther King's flag look like?

A Flag for the King
Typically, a person should not be on a flag. What the person symbolizes should be on that flag (i.e. golden arches, Wyoming's Buffalo, you can name more). Martin Luther King is also one of the most recognizable faces in our history but what would be appropriate for his flag?

An influential Civil Rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a movement
to end racial segregation in the United States. As a staunch advocate of
peaceful assembly, King was the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace
Prize. Martin Luther King Day was first observed in 1986, 18 years after
his assassination.

A flag for Martin Luther King might both represent his desire for
equality as well as his methods of peaceful assembly to achieve that
goal. Sometimes, it isn't who you are or what you look like, it is what
you leave behind that helps us all go forward.
In American culture, we have struggled to embrace that which we know instinctual to be true. This is a symptom of a capitalistic society. We allow the lowest common denominator to drive the competitive line. Many companies are judged by their profits rather than the quality of their products. In this context, it is remarkable we have seen such advancements as unionization, equal opportunity employment, voting rights for women, and desegregation. The challenge is not in our conscience, but in the desire for prosperity, providing a service at the lowest price.

Martin Luther King recognized that cost was on African American population and ultimately on all of us. For him, that was not acceptable. While capitalism is a beautiful system designed to promote fair opportunity for prosperity, it also has the capability to be very demeaning and destructive (just read The Grapes of Wrath). While we have made so much progress, still there are many mountains to move. Maybe a good reason to have a unique flag.

We are increasingly becoming one global market. The same cultural stereotypes and segregation we enacted locally on minority groups, we are passing to other parts of the world. There are some who have devoted their lives to ending this symptom of superiority. They are on the forefront of change from an environmental, labor, and human rights perspective (GASP, USAS, CFR).

You can not talk about our country without talking about sacrifice. We have paved the way as a nation for many things. But we have also made some mistakes. The flag is not a symbol of infallibility. It is not about fault or blame. It is, as Martin Luther King said, about a dream:

"I
have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation
where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the
content of their character."

The American flag is our continued dream for one nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all.
For his brother, Marcus Aubin filmed and edited this video showcasing Justin's Eagle Scout Project in Oak Lawn, IL. After some searching, Justin spoke with his local VFW and proposed replacing the old flagpole that was bracketed to the roof of the building. It wasn't long before members of the community, local business and the municipality wanted to contribute. Take a look at the video!
The flagpole has been upgraded with a natural painted eagle ornament. Whatever your flagpole mission for your home or business, it is always best to start with a good idea of how tall and what style. From there, most jobs require a few friends or employees and a few free afternoons. We can help you with the install, and pizza can help with recruiting!
October 26th, around 1:45pm,
five veterans stepped back and admired there work. There was only one
thing missing. Troy went inside and grabbed his mom. He asked if she
would do the honors of raising the American flag and christening the
flagpole. The Gomez family were once again flag fliers. This time, it
would be permanent.

For Troy, flying a flag is more than just
supporting the country. It's personal. His father served in the Navy,
his brother served in the Marines. Being a Louisiana family from Mandeville, war is not the only chaos this
family encountered. In 2005 Hurricane Katrina devastated the
neighborhood and took down the flagpole that marked the spot for this
Louisiana Flag Flying pro American family. After 8 years, Troy had
waited long enough and decided it was time to get a new flagpole.

But what do you do when you've already had one
flagpole swept away? With weather more and more erratic, it is
difficult to feel comfortable with the residential flagpole kits they
sell at a low cost. They don't stand up to the elements they claim to
be made to handle over time and in any kind of weather. A disaster
from nature is a different story but a tinker toy will not do against
heavy weather for very long.

The flagpole needs to be made to hold up where you
are located, and where you fly the flag (your flag's location). That
means not just looking at your zip code and wind zone ratings there,
but also the specific location of the flag. How exposed is your flag
to the elements? Look at a all types of flagpoles, particularly
commercial aluminum flagpoles or fiberglass.

Fortunately for Troy, he is knowledgeable in many
different areas. No doubt his background played a role in creative
problem solving. Troy didn't want to put a flagpole up to have it
fail again, so he started looking around investigating; making the
experience an adventure. This is about the time he called the
FlagRunners at FlagDesk.

When he explained his story, he was full of ideas. In
fact he had already sourced a local place where he could acquire
stainless steel straight pipe of various diameters. This would
eventually become the shaft of the flagpole. He was looking for two
things: A flagpole that could survive almost anything and something
he could pull up out of the ground and take with him if the family
ever moved.

We talk to many people who want a flagpole, but don't
know if they will be located at the same spot 20/40 years from now.
Troy's solution is easier than ours, but you have options. Troy
designed a set screw system where the flagpole slides into a base
shaft and is secured by the screws. If the family does relocate, he
can take out the screws, pull up the flagpole and be on his way. If
you have a sand-set system, you can suck out the sand with a wet/dry
vac and pull the flagpole out. This is a bit more work but flagpoles
do often need moved and reset for a variety of reasons: aggressive
landscaping, changes in your buildings design, possibly a physical
move.

The great thing about building your own flagpole is
that you can decide what components you want, and what you can live
without. You will not enjoy comfort from a kit made in who knows
where. Here is a list of parts Troy chose for his flagpole
project:

6' x 2.5" Schedule 80 Stainless Steel Pipe

20' x 2" Schedule 40 Stainless Steel Pipe

It is surprising how few materials you need to rig a
flagpole. In fact, when it comes to flying a flag, less is more. The
fewer hardware parts on your flagpole, the fewer number of things for
the flag to get caught or snagged. This helps lead to the longest
flag life and hence a better flag flying deal for you the flag flier.
Clearly it is not the whole story but it goes a long way.
Obstructions, flagpole finish are a couple other areas that will eat
up a flag fast once those problems crop up. Another good idea is to
employ a rotating truck (as Troy has done). As the flag flies, the
truck (or pulley system) at the top of the flagpole swivels. Even
though this system doesn't allow for 360 degree rotation, you only
need a small amount of movement to take a lot of stress off of the
flag and prevent the flag from furling around the pole. This means
less abrasion, less twisting and less pressure on the flag, that
saves money and the flag itself.

The first step in installing any flagpole is to dig
the hole. You've got to have a plan and understand your location.
Here are some quick notes:

Look up! Make sure the flag won't get caught on
any nearby tree branches or roof tops or bushes, etc.

Look down! Make sure there are no gas lines,
power lines, telephone lines, or lines of any kind. You may hit
roots, or bricks, or bathtubs. We've run into EVERYTHING. Call your
local underground to mark the big stuff.

Stand back! Take a step back from the property
and visualize the flag. It is not always the best to be in the exact
center of the lot. The right place usually reveals itself with
enough perspective.

Troy had all these things figured out. He dug four
feet down to set the stainless steel foundation tube (6 feet total).
Using the 12” sonotube, he set the base shaft in cement. In order
to level the base tube, he used four ratchet straps with tubular
webbing. These anchored the base tube level as the concrete set up.

Troy's family and three neighbors took the beautiful
Sunday as an opportunity to complete the project. The two stainless
steel pipes were such a tight fit, Troy had to chuck or grind about
an 1/8” off the long shaft to fit into the base pipe.

Internal

Quick Note on Internal VS. External: External flagpoles have fully exposed rope (halyard). This is the most common. Internal flagpoles have partially exposed rope. Most of the rope (halyard/cable) is on the inside of the flagpole. Basic advantages to internal halyard flagpoles, they are quieter, more secure, and have a more professional appearance - perfect for a business / home.

Black Anodized

Quick Note on Color: We are working with a black anodized flagpole. This means the flagpole shaft has been treated by a process called anodization. Anodizing the flagpole helps prevent staining and scratching. This keeps the flagpole looking beautiful for years. If you don't want a color, you can get a clear anodized flagpole which still has that brushed aluminum look / stays shiny.

Quick Note on Flagpole Dimensions: Flagpole dimensions help you determine if the flagpole you want is right for your weather. You may want a stronger flagpole if you fit one of these circumstances: you live on a coastal area, you want to fly more than one flag, you are installing your flagpole at greater elevation or more exposed area (i.e. building roof, hill top / open field).
Depending on your flagpole, you may need an assortment of tools and parts. Some components use Allen Keys while others use flat head bolts. It is important to be prepared. There will be several points on the job you do not want to stop mid-stream just because you are missing a tool. If you get your flagpole(s) from FlagDesk, we can tell you exactly what you will need to have on hand to get the job done right.
Preparing the hole dimensions and sleeve / pedestal depth
If you are using a pedestal, you can cut the sonotube to ~10" depth. It helps to make a guideline if you are cutting the tubing down by hand. Using a post or stake to mark the spot where your flagpole will go, use the sonotube to eye ball and mark the diameter of the top of the hole. We like to use screw drivers to stake the sonotube as an outline for our initial dig. Spray paint or eyeball the surface if you choose.

Start digging with a spade. Go around the sonotube until you have a clear circle around the pedestal, deep enough to go thorugh the top soil ~4". Save some soil and the healthy grass to back fill around the pedestal later.

We are using an 18" diameter sonotube on this job for the pedestal. The foundation sleeve (steel) is 8" in diameter and the flash collar to cover the foundation sleeve is 12" in diameter. The top perimeter of the foundation will serve as a digging guide.

The foundation sleeve depth is a simple formula. Depth = 10% exposed height of the flagpole. For example, a 25 ft. flagpole should have a 2.5 ft. foundation sleeve depth.

If your foundation sleeve has a lighting spike, that will add 6" to the leveling plate. The rest of the spike can be pushed into the ground. If you are going to build a pedestal it will end up ~3" above grade. The steel ground sleeve will be set ~4" above grade. This ~1" lip helps drainage by preventing water back filling into the sleeve. The pedestal ~7" below grade allows grass and other plants to grow right up to the pedestal itself. This approach adds protection from mower contact.

Before you dig, you should be aware of what you might run into. You can hit any number of hidden things: rocks, roots, (but also) gas lines, water lines, electrical lines, fiber optic cables (expensive mistake), tree roots, bricks, and more! Every state has their own services for identifying these hazards. Before you dig, call your local underground agency.

Because you never know what you might run into below, we recommend digging the foundation by hand for flagpoles under 40 ft. Digging by hand will give you the flexibility to make adjustments should you run into any surprises. Don't expect soil all the way to the bottom of the hole. In many cases we find gravel, clay, rocks and bricks. Some holes need water to help loosen the ground if it is too dry. Other holes you just need to use the coffee can! It really depends on your conditions.

If you have a high water table and you run into water before you reach the bottom of the required hole depth, you may need to compensate be creating a wider hole or using reinforcing bars. It is best to consult with a local person in your area who can make recommendations.

Mixing the concrete and leveling the foundation sleeve
Before setting the foundation sleeve, measure the center point in your hole. Take your long bar or the opposite side of a shovel handle and mark the spot. Pound a guide to make a hole at the bottom center point of the hole for ground spike on steel sleeve applications. This will center the lightening ground spike at the base of the foundation sleeve. Now place the foundation sleeve into the center of the hole, once you seat the lightening spike into the ground, it should become stable. Use a level to plum the sleeve. Run the level parallel to the sleeve and check the sleeve from two points, at 90 degrees.
CONCRETE! It is recommended that a strong 3000 PSI concrete mix or better be used. There are many ways to mix your concrete. You can use a pan (like the one in this video) or you can mix it in a bucket or even use a spinner. You can pour each bag in as you mix, remember to keep leveling the sleeve. It is easy to forget to level the sleeve as you mix the concrete. WARNING: if the sleeve is not level once the concrete sets up, you may not have enough tolerance for error and have to start over. We suggest you go slow, mix each bag, apply evenly around the sleeve, and level. If you are really concerned, you can set up a 2x4 form, but these can have a host of troubles as well. Whatever you decide, check and double check your work as you go. Slow and steady works great.
Setting up the pedestal (Centering, sloping)
Once the concrete is over 8" from the top of the foundation sleeve, you can press the sonotube pedestal into place (see the video for clarification). The Sonotube will be approximately 1" below the top of the foundation sleeve and approximately 3 inches above grade. This will give you a lip which looks great and protects the flash collar from getting dented by landscapers.

As you leveled the sleeve from the two points at 90 degrees check the pedestal form for being centered. You will also want to make sure the sleeve is equal distance from the sleeve or still centered visually. Use a tape measure and look to see if the sleeve is centered around the outer lip of the pedestal form, all the way around. Don't worry if it is not. It rarely is! You can adjust the pedestal form by pushing the wall of the pedestal as needed from the inside and the outside but check your ground sleeve again to make sure it is still plum.

Finishing the Foundation!
Before you finish the foundation, make sure the last mixture of concrete you put in is not too wet and has few pebbles. Double check the sleeve and pedestal. Are they level? If not, you can stick the pike down into the sleeve and try to adjust the sleeve some more. Good luck, you're not going to get much movement. Time to pour your final top layer (~2 inches) and start smoothing the top of the pedestal with a trowel. If your mixture is too wet, you can use the trowel to gently press out and remove the excess water. Slope the concrete up towards the sleeve. Make sure the surface is smooth, no air bubbles, and the slope is holding.
How long does it take for the foundation to set up and cure?
Congratulations, you now have your flagpole foundation! As you stand back to admire your work you may be thinking, let's get that pole in! We get that feeling every time. Unfortunately, you need to give the foundation time to set up. This can take anywhere from 5 to 7 days. For larger foundations, you may want to give it even more time. Weather determines the concrete cure time too. Cold weather just takes longer. If you have a lot of rain, cover the foundation to keep it dry, but make sure air can get in to dry and set the concrete. Once the foundation is protected, it's time to walk away.

Perfect weather, great attitude, a well run event - this is what you can expect out of the Chicago Marathon. But what makes this race successful are countless hours, countless miles and countless ice packs which allow 45,000 people to tour 26.2 miles on foot through the heart of downtown Chicago.
For the past three years, the FlagRunners have volunteered to be running coaches for Team One Step, a program to help kids with cancer go to camp. Our coaching is a great opportunity for us to help runners to reach their marathon goal while raising awareness for Team One Step. It is an exhilarating feeling to see Team One Step runners on the course!

The Chicago Marathon is the one sporting event where a runner can participate in the same field, in the same event, as the pros. This year, Eliud Kipchoge crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 4 minutes and 11 seconds (2:04:11). Last year was completed in 2:03:35. It is safe to say, for most runners, completing the 26.2 mile journey is cause enough for celebration.
You have the excuse - You are training for a marathon. And you do not like to eat your Aunt Sally's bean salad this Thanksgiving? Just say, "Oh no! I am training for a marathon". People ask you why you look so good? Say the same thing. You are training for a marathon.
However, You will have an amazing feeling of accomplishment and community of marathoners. Along the way, supporters and fellow runners alike will find you at your lowest moments and lift you up. You will tell yourself I can not believe I've come this far, then it will suddenly surprise you to find your skills almost automatically that will carry you home to the finish line.
The marathon is special, which is why it is so popular, but it doesn't stop here. Being qualified to run a marathon is both a physical and a mental question. First, it is important to be aware of your body's physical limits. Training mileage is essential.
Whether you have run one marathon or even two dozen, you can always benefit from a community of runners. A charity provides you that. The right charity, like Team One Step, will offer benefits to the Marathon experience that help you.

Not only is signing for a charity personally and strategically beneficial for running a marathon, it is also a great way to get your family, friends and co-workers involved in the experience. Having your friends contribute to the charity makes them a part of your story. They become more than fans on the side of the road, they're part of your journey too. That means your running is good for everyone.
Look for a training plan that doesn't just give you a list of miles and/or workouts, but one that looks at nutrition, recovery, injury prevention or therapy. A great training plan is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Believe me, there will be days when it is too easy to quit. That is when accountability to your training program becomes crucial. Those are the days you'll remember and those are the days you will surprise yourself.
Many people ask us, when should I start? The answer is now. Don't wait for the weather to turn or some official race welcome packet. Start with a small goal. Get outside and see what you can do. Like all the wonderful One Step Runners at the 2014 Chicago Marathon, you'll soon be at that starting line, proving to yourself that you can do it, carrying an entire community of support through to the 2015 Chicago Marathon finish line.
Today is National POW/MIA Recognition Day. In honor of those people captured or missing, we take a moment for them. True dedication can never anticipate the outcome unknown. The questions sit like dark rooms filed with file boxes in our mind. Perhaps this heavy emotional place is why the Concerned Citizen is the second most circulated flag in the United States. If you have a loved one missing or captured, today, we use this day of remembrance for you.

This flag was made after the during the Vietnam War. Mary Hoff recognized the importance of a symbol for those who had POW/MIA family or friends. Traditionally the intention of the flag is restricted to military, but with the latest capture of Journalists by the terrorist organization ISIL, we can not but feel this flag holds relevance to those family members and friends as well.
We run by residential flagpoles all the time. But this is the most complete and direct message we have seen yet; “You Are Not Forgotten” engraved across a small stone wall behind a well kept brick bed encircling a residential flagpole, flying the US flag and the POW/MIA.

We ran across northern Indiana. The video was taken in a small community in Michigan City. We didn’t expect to run through a residential neighborhood and see something like this, a household with a flag and display that moved us.

The American flag is the most common to find, but many states require the POW to be flown with the US flag at all Public facilities including schools, municipalities, water works, Transportation departments, DMVs, and the list goes on. But residents do not have to fly a flag. Becoming a flag flier is a personal choice to say something to your community. To go the extra step to fly a US and a POW is impressive.

The Concerned Citizen is one of the most symbolic and visual flags ever made. The white design on black is unmistakable, even from a distance. This illustration depicts the connection between our freedoms as citizens and the soldiers Missing in Action or Prisoners of War. This flag was created by William Graham Wilkin III. In 1988, March 9th became National POW/MIA Recognition Day. The following years, the date changed until the 3rd Friday in September became dedicated to the day of remembrance.
The telescoping flagpole is made of 16 gauge aluminum. For many residential areas, this is a quality solution. 16 gauge aluminum sheeting is 0.0508 inches thick, compared to a commercial flagpole, which are 0.125 inches and thicker. The thicker the flagpole wall/wider the diameter, the more heavy duty the flagpole. For those in windy areas, the telescoping flagpole may not be the best choice. This flagpole has two 3 x 5 foot flags, an American Nylon Flag. The other flag was really the statement of the display, representing Prisoners of War and Missing in Action. This black and white flag is very powerful with the phrase "You Are Not Forgotten" across the bottom. This was a 3 x 5 foot POW/MIA Flag.
We hope on this day, you find some time to reflect on those missing or captured.
Flag Flyers are the back bone of our communities!

Marengo, IL, June 28th 2014 -- The Flag Runners were invited to a flag raising celebration party. This came after installing a 25 ft. Black Anodized Aluminum flagpole for the Warmbold family. In honor of their graduating son from the University of Wisconsin as 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force, Barb and Eric hosted a college graduation and military commissioning party. Flag flyers gathered round as Gavin was presented with this unique flagpole graduation present.

A very proud mother stood in front of a crowd which lined the property as she thanked everyone for their part in helping Gavin achieve his goals. Gavin's dad flipped on the Star Spangled Banner and we watched and sang as the flag was hoisting up the brand new flagpole. We sat back and watched all of this and thought, this is why we just like people who fly flags. They are the back bone of their communities. They come together in quiet ways to make a community a place called home.

The Invitation process! It all began as most things begin for us... a phone call. A kind-voiced woman, Barb Warmbold was on the other end. She had looked at our website and video's on the Flag Runners site and had some questions. Not just any flagpole would do for her son.

There are a lot of things to consider when looking to become a flag flyer. For some, this challenge can be a little intimidating. But for Barb, it turned into a bit of a hobby. She relished in learning all the flagpole systems, the wall weights, mechanisms. It all made sense to us later, when we found out she was a teacher!

The research and the planning paid off in spades. It was difficult to resist being a complete perfectionist as we got wrapped up in it. Every element of this flagpole is seemingly more alluring than the next. And what made it even better, was having the opportunity to see Gavin's face light up as he saw the flagpole for the first time. He had told his mother he wanted a flagpole for graduation, but I don't think he had anything of this magnitude in mind.

The flagpole is 25 ft tall with an internal cam cleat mechanism. This design allows the rope of the flagpole to be housed inside the flagpole. The benefits of an internal flagpole system over an external flagpole system are pretty simple. The external flagpole has all the ropes exposed on the outside of the flagpole. It is a standard flagpole system and what you might call the "classic." It's counterpart, the internal system has a clever design, allowing the ropes to be concealed inside the flagpole. This gives the flagpole a more sleek design, natural security, and tends to be quieter than the "classic" external style.

But not only is this 25 ft. flagpole internal, it is treated with a process called anodization. This is a paint dipping process that electrically charges the aluminum until the metal is coated. The darker the coating, the longer the process. The Warmbold flagpole is black anodized. This gives it not only a matching appearance to the rest of the house, but also a protective coating from stain and deterioration. There is a natural painted eagle ornament on top. The eagke has a 15" wing span and looks amazing above the black flagpole.
And finally, not to go too far down the rabbit hole of flagpole mania, Barb had us make up a special flagpole dedication plaque to both mark the date and share with others Gavin's patriotism and commitment her son has demonstrated to the Air Force. This is not a small gesture. Barb says that even from an early age, it was something Gavin felt he was called to do. This celebration was about being called to do service and having belief in yourself.

Gavin had a remarkable sense of respect and admiration for his family, friends, and all the veterans. He addressed the older veterans present that he and his mate's joined to follow where they had already gone before. He told everyone that these veterans present did it and they are doing it because it is the right thing to do. Very moving to hear this humble perspective.
On the morning of June 28th, we embarked on a journey to mount the plaque onto the flagpole, this was the final piece of Gavin's graduation present. We were welcomed once again by the Warmbolds as they were setting chairs for the party. With the plaque set we went to the back of the house to find a donkey and miniature horse (just wait till the end of the video)!

People started shuffling in. Students from the school Barb teaches, volunteered to help direct traffic, set up and cater. Soon, the property was full of friends of all ages and walks of Gavin's life. The moment had come for Gavin to raise the flag.Oscarmike.org arrived, a lot of people.
American and military branch flags sailed on their backs. We came to learn these were the Warriors' Watch Riders. They are a group of veterans and citizens who welcome home veterans (literally they escort them home) as well as attend other patriotic events. They were here to honor Gavin's passage into duty.

The community of flag flyers responded. Everyone came out. There were Municipal, commercial and service folks who seemed to all fly the flag and have a story. That makes the community strong. Take a look at the video and consider how to include your flagpole as a rallying point for your affairs. It will showcase the event in a very magnetic way. Personally we can't wait for the next flag flying party.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17483647678131735261noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3288346161720486144.post-560013463778141572014-08-28T15:51:00.000-05:002014-08-28T16:14:15.858-05:00GLOBAL CITIZENS, GLOBAL FLAGS on PLAZA at CHAPMAN UNIVERSITY

For a freshman college student, move in day is a unique experience. Several people in matching t-shirts bond for a single day, for the single purpose of helping young adults launch onto the path of independence. It is an exciting time and can also be scary. But colleges and universities are well aware of what it takes to take this leap. And right now, we are in the middle of back to school. In the case of Chapman University in Orange, California, supporting the success of the student is not just a concern in terms of educational track but also cultural identity. Chapman raises the flag for each of its incoming students and faculty.

Praised as one of the most beautiful campuses in the country, Chapman University actively creates a space designed to inspire its students. In 2009, this continued journey led to the dedication of the Ambassador George L. Argyros Global Citizens Plaza. Former U.S. Secretary of State, Colin Powell–in attendance–gave a speech during the ceremony. Sixty four international flags represent the identities of the student body, faculty and staff at Chapman University. They fly surrounding the central theme of the plaza, the Julianne Argyros Fountain (Ambassador Argyros' wife of more than 45 years). This not only welcomes International students and faculty, but also connects Chapman University to the global community.

The University encourages its students to "connect the dots between disciplines and their humanity to create meaningful, character-driven lives." This plaza is not only at the center of this statement, connecting humanity through these flags, but is also a focal point physically for the future of the school. Director of Communications and Media Relations, Mary Platt, explained, "This breathtaking and colorful sight (which is floodlit all night) serves as a landmark for the community both on and off campus. When construction on the nearby 1,100-seat Marybelle and Sebastian P. Musco Center for the Arts is completed in late 2015, the Argyros Global Citizens Plaza will serve as a welcoming area leading to the eastern approach to the arts center."

Ambassador George L. Argyros, to whom this plaza is dedicated, attended school here and graduated in 1959. Utilizing his Business and Economics degree, he plays an active role in both business and politics. Honoring Ambassador Argyros for his role as an international business man and representative for the U.S. Signifies Chapman Universities' mission for a diverse curriculum and community, as well as an inspiring story about a student, who many years ago dreamed of a life with an international impact and experience.

The difficulty of tolerance is greatly outweighed by its benefit. Every flag tells a story. But it is the dots between these stories that makes America unique. While other nations are influenced by cultures, we are made up of many cultures. This is a story of sacrifice. It is also a story of unity, creativity, making mistakes and moving forward. The plaza is a symbol of standing together, using our differences as a catalyst for a better tomorrow. Welcome once again. This is the final tutorial in a 6 part series explaining how to install a flagpole. While you can use this guide to install anything under 35 ft, we are focusing on a 20 ft external commercial aluminum flagpole.
On Flag Day, 2013, we set off not just to install a flagpole but help others do the same. These 6 tutorials have covered a wide range of topics. A quick read through would greatly help you plan and execute your job effectively. When we finished cutting the video together, it was over 30 minutes long! We decided this was too much information for one article or video. This has allowed us to get into more detail with each aspect of the flag flying process.
Part 6: Proper Way to Raise, Level, and Set flagpole, and Fly a Flag
Today, we are looking at those final steps: Raising the flagpole into the sleeve, leveling the flagpole with sand, adding the snap hooks and covers, as well as raising the American flag.

Raising the flagpole

(Be careful when raising the flagpole. It can be easy to drop for the flagpole if you get impatient. Also, don't forget the flash collar!)

One of the most crucial stages to any flagpole project is taking the flagpole from laying on the ground to up-right in the air. Luckily, many flagpoles (30 ft tall or less) can be raised by walking the flagpole up with one or two people while a third person holds the base of the flagpole down into the foundation sleeve and helps guide the flagpole into the sleeve. In this case, we only needed two.

Level and set the flagpole

The flagpole is in the sleeve, but needs to be leveled. Here, you will need sand. It is recommended to not use a very fine sand. Every year for decades, bikers have come to Iowa and ridden from west to east through various new towns to roost nightly for a week of fun and biking effort. This is an event known as RagBrai and this year marks its 42nd run; around 468 miles of Iowa plains and hills. It is a bike ride, not a race, and one of the honored traditions Iowa and other riders from the 50 States and around the world.
The Flag Runners want to acknowledge you and thank you. You are the Flag Flyer in your community and flying our flag this 4th of July holiday makes a difference. Sadly and few really know this that many communities these last few years are just broke and are left without the financial means and options to host costly fireworks celebration displays for their people to enjoy.

Elyria, OH Cascade Park has turned it around. The last show was 2007, now let the show begin.
(see article) http://chronicle.northcoastnow.com/2014/03/18/elyria-mayor-seeks-donations-bring-back-fourth-july-fireworks/

Our great country now has 26 major cities bankrupt so this is not an isolated case above. It is a comfort to us to know that individuals like you that fly the flag are creating a vibrant visual display, in many cases 24/7/365, and especially on this most important of holidays. Our special day, the day that Old Glory became a democracy and an independent nation. Happy 4th of July to all Flag Flyer's. You're the reason we like to say:
we will not be covering options as much as we'll be making sure halyard (rope) is secure to the flagpole and doesn't snap or break on you. If you are installing a new flagpole or rebuilding a broken down flagpole with new updated parts then this is the series for you. It is worth taking a look at
these tutorial videos.
Part 5: Proper way to Tie Halyard (knot) and Attach Cleat
Rope which attaches a flag to a flagpole in called halyard. This is a special type of rope because it is unilaterally woven. On boats, it is called lanyard. When the nylon is wrapped unilaterally, the rope expands and contracts uniformly. This way the rope does not create pockets within the layers which could cause rapid decay and fray within the rope. The last thing you want is for your flagpole halyard to break. This can be a costly mistake.

Wire Center Halyard prevents rope breaking (Syracuse, NY)

AVOIDING FLAGPOLE ROPE FAILURE
Flagpole halyard fails for two reasons: 1)It is regular rope and not halyard. 2) The flagpole or hardware has rough edges which cut into the line over time. Both are very easy to determine. The important thing is to be vigilant. If vigilance is not an option, you can always get upgrade.

The most durable halyard is called wire-center halyard. It has a stainless steel cable core which will prevent breakage. It will take serious neglect over several years before this halyard breaks. You can always request wire-center halyard with your new flagpole as an upgrade.

How to Rig the Halyard to the Flagpole
We find it is best to attach the flagpole truck before you string the flagpole. This way you can have a good handle on the truck while you are securing the flagpole truck. Also it is easier to line up the pulley to the cleat for stationary (fouling) trucks. Once the truck is attached, you can pass the halyard end through the truck pulley(s). Pull the rope through and walk toward the base of the flagpole.
Tying the knot: Our favorite knot is a clever knot which tightens over time. In the video we illustrate the best method. We also have a guide on this knot click here. But here are the steps:

Take the two ends of the rope and have them oppose each other and overlap by 10 to 12 inches.

Start with the end facing away from you. Take this end and wrap it over and around both ropes with slack.

Repeat this so you have two loops with the second loop below the first.

Pass the rope through the center of the two loops from the bottom loop to the the top.

Tighten so that the two loops are secure to the adjacent rope.

Flip the rope so the end which was facing you is now facing away.

Make two loops as you did before. First loop above the second loop.

Pass the rope through the two loops and tighten.

Take the line on both sides (without the tails) and pull apart. The knot should set.

Duct tape the tails... cut as needed if there is a lot of slack.

Now you have strung the flagpole, it is time to attach and wrap the cleat.
A cleat is a two-pronged piece of hardware used to easily secure and release rope. It is important that the cleat is fixed properly and that the wrapping is correct for the best taught hold. If the wrapping is not correct, the line can have quite a bit of give. This can cause the flag to fly a good distance from the flagpole. Here we will discuss both.

How to attach the cleat: We recommend making pilot holes before screwing the cleat. With aluminum, you want to use stainless steel screws. Some flagpoles come with self-tapping screws. These can give you some problems. You do not want to screw them in crooked. Guide holes will ensure the screws go straight in. You can't really redo this step so you have to make it right on the first round. Tap the screw holes so that the threads are taking and the crew can easily turn. In the video, the holes were already made in the shop.

Once the pilot holes are tapped, you can hand tighten the cleat onto the flagpole starting with one screw at a time. Do not fully tighten on or you could strip the threading when tightening the other. Make sure both are relatively screwed in before you tighten.

Wrapping the cleat: For a great article on wrapping flagpole cleats, click here. First, draw the rope together and pass (both ropes) tautly under the bottom prong of the cleat, up around the top prong. This will lock the rope. Now half hitch the rope (cross) across the cleat to the bottom prong. Now, you can wrap the remaining rope or lock the rope as needed.

Now we are ready for the final phase! Next time, we are going to raise the flagpole into the sleeve, level the pole, and attach the flag. Stay tuned! Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17483647678131735261noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3288346161720486144.post-50751145494351401982014-06-16T15:42:00.003-05:002014-06-17T12:12:46.722-05:00Wave Your Flag: USA vs. Ghana

Today, USA will face (for the 3rd time) Ghana in the World Cup. We've lost to Ghana twice. This time, USA is prepared. Good luck team. 2014 is our year!

FINAL:
As promised, the game was pretty heated, even ugly at times. But USA pulls away with a decisive revenge victory and proves the number 3 is not as lucky as some Guyanese football players may think!
